Why Cairn Terrier Puppies make Great Pets

The Cairn Terrier may be small, but they are a sturdy working breed. Initially bred in Scotland to help rid farms of small rodents, the breed today is a great dog for someone looking for a breed with personality. You may recognize the Cairn Terrier as one of the most famous dogs in cinema: Terry or “Toto” in the Wizard of OZ. He is a great family dog, with loads of energy to play with children and a generally even temperament.

They are also an independent dog, sometimes forgetting their own size, so don’t be surprised if they try to hold their own against a larger dog. If you’re looking to add a Cairn Terrier to your family or wish to know more about the breed, here are three facts you should know about this dog:

1. The Cairn Terrier is a quick learner.

Intelligent and inquisitive, this is a curious breed and can pick up commands with ease. Cairn Terriers are a very proud dog. It will be essential to train them when they are a puppy so that they learn to socialize and not have destructive behaviors. Though even with training, however, you might not be able to rid the terrier of their tendency to dig, bark, and run around.

2. Cairn Terriers may be small but they are active.

They may be small, but they have enough energy to last all day. This makes them a great breed for people looking for a small but active dog, especially for apartment living. Like most Terriers, their energy levels stem from when the breed was chasing small game and rodents. It is important to make sure your Cairn Terrier has daily exercise so that they can release their excess energy.

3. They are cute and easy to clean.

The Cairn Terrier does have a double coat but is easy to clean. Their top coat is wiry, and their undercoat is soft, making them suitable for cooler climates. Giving your pet a weekly brushing will help keep their wiry coat tangle-free. They do not need excess baths as well. Fortunately, the Cairn Terrier is not a breed that excessively sheds, but it is still important to trim and brush their coat to help control shedding.
